South Lakes High School stands to lose 384 students when Fairfax County's boundary changes take effect in the 2027-28 school year, and coaches across the Concorde District say the impact will ripple through rosters, staffing and competitive balance for years.

The Fairfax County School Board unanimously approved Skyview High School's attendance boundaries on Thursday, July 16, reassigning 2,544 students across five western pyramids. South Lakes loses 384 students. Westfield loses 1,062. Chantilly loses 333.

For South Lakes families in Reston, the question is what that means on the field.

"As a coach, the best thing we can do in our position is talk with these kids about how they feel about this and the options they have and hope that with the new changes, we retain as many players as we can," South Lakes coach Jason Hescock told the Fairfax Times in a story published Friday.

Coaches at other Concorde schools echoed the concern. Westfield coach Scott Vossler said losing staff and decreased course offerings could push even more students away from affected schools, compounding the enrollment-driven losses: "If you lose kids who were supposed to come here that end up going somewhere else, it affects everything."

Oakton coach Said Aziz said new schools reduce depth across multiple sports but added that area programs tend to rebuild within a year or two. Centreville coach Joshua Culver, whose school was largely spared in the revised boundary proposal, said the affected programs will feel it "when it all comes through."

Staffing at stake

FCPS ties staffing levels to enrollment. Younger teachers, who often coach or run extracurricular programs, are the most vulnerable when student counts drop. Coaches worry that losing those staff members could thin out the adults available to run programs, not just the athletes filling them.

Some coaches also raised the possibility that students may opt out of public school entirely for private alternatives, further reducing rosters beyond the boundary-driven losses.

Skyview still without VHSL membership

Skyview, located at 2949 Education Drive in the Floris area south of Herndon, is still pursuing full membership in the Virginia High School League. Until that membership is granted, the school cannot field varsity teams. More than 700 students voluntarily enrolled at Skyview for the 2026-27 school year while the process continues.

Once admitted, Skyview is expected to join the Concorde District, expanding the league from six schools to seven.

Board pledged to protect programs

Hunter Mill District School Board member Melanie Meren, whose district includes South Lakes, told the Fairfax Times on July 24 that the board would work to ensure enrollment declines do not diminish academic programming or extracurricular opportunities at South Lakes and Westfield.

No specific timeline for Skyview's VHSL approval has been publicly confirmed. South Lakes families with students entering fall sports tryouts in 2027 will be watching whether roster depth holds or whether the boundary shift reshapes the Seahawks' competitive standing in the Concorde District.
