A family of three died Sept. 6 after their Honda Pilot rear-ended a truck hauling oxygen tanks on the westbound I-66 Express Lanes, according to FFXnow.

The crash happened at about 4:10 p.m. at mile marker 64.3 near the I-495 interchange in the Dunn Loring area. The Honda struck the rear of the stopped truck, and the vehicle caught fire. All three occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

The South Lakes Sentinel identified the victims as Marylsha Liddell, Paul Liddell, and their 4-year-old daughter, Leilani Liddell. The family was driving home from St. Augustine Church in Washington, D.C.

"It's not three fatalities, it's three amazing people the world has lost," Monica Gray, a member of St. Augustine Church, told the South Lakes Sentinel.

Virginia State Police said a Toyota 4Runner was also involved in the events leading up to the collision. The Sentinel reported the 4Runner was forced from the travel lane and struck road markers before the oxygen-tank truck stopped in the express lane.

After consulting with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, police charged both the truck driver and the Toyota driver with one count of reckless driving each, according to Virginia State Police. The Sentinel identified the Toyota driver as Juarez Bautista, 55, and the truck driver as Jesus Huaman, 45.

The charges are allegations. No additional details about the circumstances behind the charges have been released.

The crash shut down the westbound Express Lanes and several other lanes for nearly seven hours. All lanes reopened shortly before 11 p.m. on Sept. 6, Fox 5 reported.

The collision was one of four traffic fatalities in Fairfax County over the Labor Day weekend, according to the Fairfax Times. A separate pedestrian was killed on I-395.

Virginia State Police said as of Sept. 8 that the investigation remained ongoing. No court date for the charged drivers has been announced.
