Fairfax County Public Schools shifted its 2026-27 Eid al-Fitr holiday one day earlier, giving students and staff a day off Tuesday, March 9, 2027.

The full holiday was originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 10. The district announced the change in its weekly update published Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Under the revised schedule, Monday, March 8, is now an evening-only observance day. School will be in session, but major activities like auditions and tryouts will not take place after school hours.

March 9 becomes the full holiday. No classes, no staff.

Wednesday, March 10, shifts to an observance day. Classes will be held, but major tests, field trips, and mandatory events that cannot be made up will not take place. On observance days, the district also restricts quizzes, school pictures, assemblies, guest speakers, and safety drills that occur only once or twice per year.

Under the original calendar published in August, March 9 was listed as an evening-only observance and March 10 as the holiday. The district did not explain why the dates shifted but noted that calendar dates may move further because they depend on lunar sightings that govern the Islamic calendar.

For Reston families in the South Lakes High School attendance area, the practical effect is straightforward: plan around March 9 as the day off, not March 10.

FCPS policy protects students who observe religious holidays beyond the designated day off. Absences on observance days cannot be marked unexcused, and no graded assignments may be due the day after an observance unless announced at least one week in advance, according to the district's observance-day guidelines.

The updated 2026-27 calendar also lists the first full day of Ramadan as Monday, Feb. 8, 2027, with fasting beginning at sundown Sunday, Feb. 7.
