Fairfax County Police officers will meet with residents over coffee Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 2004 Opportunity Way in Reston.
The drop-in event runs from 9 to 11 a.m. and is part of the 10th annual National Coffee with a Cop Day. The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) is hosting five simultaneous sessions across the county that morning, with the Reston District holding its event at the Opportunity Way location, according to the department's community events blog. Other sessions are planned in the McLean, Mount Vernon, West Springfield and Mason districts.
The FCPD describes the events as a way to bring residents and officers together. Attendees can talk with officers about neighborhood concerns, safety questions and local policing.
The Reston District has held several Coffee with a Cop sessions at different locations this year, including at Hunters Woods Plaza on July 1, at the Reston District Station on Soapstone Drive on July 15 and at the Target on Sunset Hills Road on Aug. 26.
Those informal meetups have produced real results. In August, FFXnow reported that a community member who spoke with a detective at a National Night Out event in Reston later shared video that helped police identify and charge a man with 18 counts tied to vehicle burglaries and thefts in the area.
National Coffee with a Cop Day has been held on the first Wednesday of October each year since the Hawthorne Police Department in California founded the initiative in 2011.
The FCPD's Reston District Station is located at 2235 Soapstone Drive. Residents with questions about the Oct. 7 event or other community programs can email [email protected]. The department also encourages residents to sign up on Nextdoor for local updates or subscribe to their district station's newsletter at fairfaxcounty.gov/mailinglist under Public Safety.
