Cyrus Rivers, a Reston native and bass singer in the Yale Whiffenpoofs, is bringing the storied a cappella group to Northern Virginia for a concert on Thursday, Oct. 15.
The 14-member ensemble will perform at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 543 Beulah Rd. NE, Vienna, at 7:30 p.m. Rivers, a 2023 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), told Patch the concert is part of a Whiffenpoofs tradition: each member gets a hometown show added to the schedule.
General admission tickets cost $25. Student and child tickets are $15, available through the group's Ticketbud page.
Founded in 1909, the Whiffenpoofs are recognized as the world's oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group, according to the group's official website. Each year, 14 Yale seniors are chosen for the group. They perform more than 200 concerts across six continents annually.
Rivers has done this before. He brought another Yale group, the Alley Cats, to Reston in 2025. That show, he told Patch, drew the largest public audience of the Alley Cats' entire year.
"NoVA is incredibly accessible for traveling groups, with a welcoming arts community and plenty of opportunity," Rivers told Patch, explaining why he chose the area again.
The Whiffenpoofs' repertoire spans traditional Yale songs, jazz standards and contemporary favorites. The group has performed for Presidents Obama, Bush (41 and 43), Clinton and Reagan, and at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. Television appearances include "The West Wing," "Glee," "Saturday Night Live" and "Gilmore Girls."
The Church of the Holy Comforter, an Episcopal parish in Vienna, has a history of hosting similar performances, according to Patch.
