South Lakes beat West Potomac 28-6 on Friday, Sept. 18, building a 28-6 halftime lead behind quarterback Christian Wyatt's near-perfect passing night and a defense that held the Wolverines to 81 total yards.
The Seahawks scored on three of their first four possessions at West Potomac High School. Wyatt completed 11 of 12 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns, added a 17-yard rushing score and finished with zero interceptions. The 4-0 start is South Lakes' best since 2023, according to Patch.
The opening drive covered 72 yards and ended with Wyatt scrambling into the end zone. Running back James Smith made it 14-0 on the next possession, needing just two plays to break a 41-yard touchdown run up the middle. Smith said after the game he read the defensive line and saw the middle defender shift right, then burst through the gap.
All-region wide receiver Nick Picarelli caught a season-best seven passes for 67 yards, including a 17-yard bubble-screen touchdown that pushed the lead to 21-0. West Potomac's focus on Picarelli left fellow receiver Josh Dagbe in single coverage on the other side.
West Potomac's lone score came next when Marshall LoCascio forced a fumble on Picarelli after a catch and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown. The extra point failed, making it 21-6.
Dagbe answered with three catches for 39 yards, capping the first-half scoring with a 13-yard touchdown reception from Wyatt. That made it 28-6 at the break.
The defense was suffocating. West Potomac managed just 35 rushing yards and 46 passing yards for the game. At halftime, the Wolverines had five yards rushing and 19 yards passing. Defensive back Cameron Soto said the Seahawks studied West Potomac's cutback lanes and stayed in front of their runners.
Still, coach Jason Hescock was not satisfied. South Lakes scored nothing in the second half, took two drive-killing sacks and missed a field goal. Hescock challenged his players after the game.
"Is this really the best we got? We're wasting a lot of potential. We have to stop doing that. We have to play a whole game," Hescock said.
The pattern is not new. South Lakes led Yorktown 40-3 at halftime in the Aug. 28 opener and won 43-21. In the three games since, the Seahawks have dominated first halves and gone quiet after the break. Wyatt acknowledged the issue, saying he needs to learn when to throw the ball away instead of taking sacks.
With the game in hand, backup quarterback Gavin Satterfield took snaps and reserves Sean Ventura and Calvin Lucier each carried the ball four times in the second half.
South Lakes enters a bye week before hosting Herndon at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in the annual Baron Cameron Bowl. MaxPreps ranks the Seahawks 18th in Virginia heading into the rivalry game, which dates to 1998.
