The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors honored the Reston YMCA's 25th anniversary with a resolution on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The facility on Sunset Hills Road has provided more than $2 million in financial assistance to residents over that span.
The resolution, first reported by Patch, recognized the YMCA's youth programs, wellness initiatives and community partnerships. Board Chairman Jeff McKay and Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn co-requested the honor.
That $2 million helped make memberships and programs accessible regardless of a family's ability to pay, according to the resolution.
The facility traces its roots to a public-private partnership in the 1990s. Former Hunter Mill District Supervisor Bob Dix worked with Reston Land Corporation CEO Jim Cleveland and YMCA leaders to build on county-owned property. The plan included a permanent teen center. After a private fundraising campaign, construction began in 1999, and the YMCA opened in 2000.
Alcorn's ties to the Y run deep. He told the board he signed up for a family membership before the doors opened.
"I actually joined and got a family membership for this Y before it was open," Alcorn said.
He pointed to camps, childcare and community programming as what sets the facility apart from a typical gym.
McKay thanked Dix for driving the project from concept to completion. He also highlighted the YMCA's work with young people and called the organization another layer of support for Reston residents.
Erik Van de Poll, vice president of operations for the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, accepted the recognition. Van de Poll said the YMCA's impact should be measured not by program counts but by the people it has served, pointing to generations of campers, teen program participants and seniors who found health resources through the facility.
The Reston YMCA continues to draw families. In April, the facility hosted its annual Healthy Kids Day, bringing together community partners and local leaders. Miss US International 2025 Nicky Kandola, a Reston native and former YMCA member, attended the event.
The YMCA Fairfax County Reston, a branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, is located at 12196 Sunset Hills Road. Current programs include child care, summer camps, youth sports, aquatics, fitness classes, diabetes prevention and nutrition counseling, according to the YMCA's website. Residents can reach the facility at (703) 742-8800.
