A 65-year-old Reston man is in custody after being arrested in connection with the theft of $580 in cash from a college employee's car at Northern Virginia Community College's Loudoun Campus in Sterling.
Lewis Robert Hembry faces charges of larceny and possession of a Schedule I or II controlled substance, according to court filings cited by Loudoun Now. Officers found Hembry smoking crack at the scene, the filings state.
The theft was caught on camera.
NVCC Police and Loudoun County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the campus around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24, after receiving a report of a robbery. The $580 was taken from a car belonging to a college staff member, according to court documents.
The incident was initially classified as a robbery but has since been reclassified as a larceny, an NVCC spokesperson told Loudoun Now. The reclassification reflects the current charges Hembry faces, which do not include robbery.
Hembry has several past felony convictions, including prior arrests for burglary, drug violations, fraud and larceny, court filings show. He has been banned from the NVCC Loudoun Campus.
Hembry was arraigned this week and remains in custody. Additional charges are pending.
The NVCC Loudoun Campus sits in Sterling, roughly 15 miles northwest of Reston. No involvement by the Fairfax County Police Department's Reston District Station has been reported in connection with the case; the investigation was handled by NVCC Police and the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.
