Two Reston residents killed aboard American Airlines Flight 77 will be honored at Fairfax County's 25th anniversary 9/11 remembrance Friday, Sept. 11.
Norma Cruz Khan, 45, and Leonard E. Taylor, 44, were passengers on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. Their names are inscribed on a bronze memorial at the Freedom Grove at Brown's Chapel, commissioned by the Reston Association and sculpted by artist Kathy Walden Kaplan.
The county's main ceremony begins at 10:10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Fairfax County Public Safety Headquarters, 12099 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax. Deputy Fire Chief Bill Betz, who responded to the Pentagon that day, will open the program. Scheduled speakers include Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay, Fire Chief John Butler, Police Chief Kevin Davis and Sheriff Stacey Kincaid, according to Patch.
The ceremony will also honor Master Police Officer Donald Gotthardt Jr. and Fire Battalion Chief Michael Tamillow, two Fairfax County public safety members who died from illnesses linked to their 9/11 response.
Residents who cannot attend in person can watch a livestream on Fairfax County Government Channel 16, the county's Department of Emergency Management and Security posted on X.
Khan was a manager of member services at the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors-National Association and the mother of a 13-year-old son, Imran, according to the Pentagon Memorial. She also served on the planning committee for the Reston Multicultural Festival. After the attacks, the community chose to hold the festival that September, making it Reston's first gathering after 9/11.
"When fear could have divided us, Reston chose connection," Reston Community Center Executive Director BeBe Nguyen said at an Aug. 25 Board of Supervisors meeting honoring the festival's 25th anniversary.
Taylor was a technical group manager at XonTech Inc. in Washington, D.C. An avid cyclist, he often rode 20 miles each way to work and participated in charity bike rides, according to the Pentagon Memorial.
Both were among at least 29 people from Fairfax County communities killed in the attacks.
The Reston Association memorial at Freedom Grove is open for visits year-round.
