A Jimmy Stewart biopic will make its East Coast premiere in Reston as part of the Washington West Film Festival, which returns for its 15th year Oct. 8–12.

The five-day festival brings feature films, documentaries, shorts and filmmaker discussions to venues across Reston and Northern Virginia. All box office proceeds go to nonprofit partners, though organizers have not yet named this year's recipients.

Most screenings take place at LOOK Dine-In Cinemas at Reston Town Center, 11940 Market St. The festival also uses Reston Community Center's Leila Gordon Theatre at 2310 Colts Neck Road, along with venues in Arlington, Tysons Corner, Sterling and Stone Ridge.

The opening night film on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. is "Stronger Than You Think," a documentary following swimmer Ali Truwit's journey to the 2024 Paralympics after surviving a shark attack.

The festival's marquee screening is "Jimmy," a biopic starring KJ Apa that covers a six-year stretch between Jimmy Stewart's Oscar win for "The Philadelphia Story" and his casting in "It's a Wonderful Life," with a focus on his World War II military service. FFXnow first reported that Reston will be only the second location to screen the film, after its world premiere at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis. A nationwide theatrical release is set for Friday, Nov. 6. Screenings at LOOK Dine-In Cinemas are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The 6:30 p.m. screening includes a 20-minute tribute to the late Robert Duvall, with his wife Luciana Duvall participating. The Robert Duvall Children's Fund was a philanthropic partner of the festival from 2015 through 2018.

Festival founder and president Brad Russell said the event will also honor Karolyn Grimes, who played Zuzu Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life" at age 6. Grimes, now 86, will receive a lifetime achievement award.

"Karolyn's line near the end of the film is truly one of the most famous movie lines in cinematic history, and we're so honored to host her for the East Coast Premiere of Jimmy," Russell said in the festival's Sept. 10 announcement.

The lineup includes several Sundance Film Festival selections, according to the festival's schedule, among them "Union County" and "Jane Elliott Against the World," plus short films and student work from George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The festival wraps Monday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. with the documentary "Holding Liat" at the Leila Gordon Theatre. Director Brandon Kramer is scheduled to appear for a post-screening discussion.

Tickets are on sale. Washingtonian magazine lists single passes at $22 and festival passes at $100 or more. The full schedule is available at wwfilmfest.com.

A free outdoor screening of Disney's animated "Beauty and the Beast" precedes the festival on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. at Reston Town Center's pavilion, presented by the Reston Town Center Association.
