Reston-headquartered Leidos plans to permanently lay off 84 employees at its Ashburn facility, the second round of cuts at the site this year tied to a federal cybersecurity contract.

The defense and technology contractor filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice with the Virginia Employment Commission on Monday, Sept. 28, Ashburn Patch first reported. The layoffs at 22001 Loudoun County Pkwy. are expected to begin Nov. 23.

The facility will not close.

The notice's subject line names the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Cyber Security Operations Center (SOC) Program. That program has been at the center of both rounds of cuts. In January, Leidos filed a separate WARN notice for 93 layoffs at the same address, with those cuts set to begin March 23, Virginia Business reported.

The earlier filing was tied to a recompete of a possible $100 million CBP contract announced in August 2025. Leidos was the incumbent contractor. CBP's Office of Information and Technology operates from the same Loudoun County Parkway address. Whether the latest round stems from the same recompete or from a separate six-month cybersecurity support contract awarded in late March 2026 is unclear. Patch reported it had reached out to Leidos for comment but had not received a response.

The January notice described those layoffs as "temporarily/permanently," while the September filing calls the new cuts permanent.

Leidos reported about $17.2 billion in revenue for the fiscal year that ended Jan. 2, 2026, and has roughly 50,000 employees worldwide, according to company press releases. The company is a major contractor for the U.S. Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Transportation.

The cuts come amid broader layoffs across Northern Virginia. WARN Act filings show 451 job losses announced in the region between June 21 and Sept. 21, a 47 percent increase over the same period in 2025, when 306 losses were announced. The wider Washington metropolitan area lost more than 100,500 jobs between May 2025 and May 2026, according to the Metropolitan Council of Governments. More than half were federal government positions.

Despite the layoffs, Leidos' careers page still lists more than a page of open Ashburn positions, including systems engineering and software development roles requiring public trust clearances. The 84 affected employees have until Nov. 23 before the cuts take effect.
