Nearly 22,900 Fairfax County residents were looking for work in June, a 49% surge from 18 months earlier that puts a hard number on the economic pressure building along Reston's Dulles Toll Road tech corridor.

The county's non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate hit 3.6% in June, up from 3.2% a year earlier, according to Virginia Department of Workforce Development and Advancement data released July 29. The figures, first reported by FFXnow, show 22,888 county residents seeking jobs out of a civilian workforce of 611,867.

That's a 10% year-over-year increase in the number of unemployed residents. Measured against December 2024, when 15,275 residents were counted as jobless, the jump is 49%.

The data arrives as Reston's tech corridor faces mounting pressure. As we reported Tuesday, Aug. 4, Reston-headquartered GDIT cut 174 Pentagon-related positions in August, and the Dulles Toll Road tech corridor's office vacancy rate sits at 24.5%. The broader D.C. region lost 100,500 jobs between May 2025 and May 2026, more than half of them federal.

Regional picture

Northern Virginia's unemployment rate also registered 3.6% in June, with about 61,600 people looking for work out of roughly 1.67 million in the civilian workforce. That's up from 3.2% a year earlier.

The total Northern Virginia workforce shrank 2.6% over the past year. Some residents moved away, while others retired or shifted into self-employment not captured in monthly reports, according to FFXnow's analysis of the data.

Neighboring jurisdictions saw similar increases: Arlington rose to 3.1%, Alexandria to 3.1%, Falls Church to 3.6% and the City of Fairfax to 3.3%.

Below average but rising

Fairfax County's 3.6% rate remains below both the national average of 4.4% and the D.C. metro area's 4.1%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data also released July 29. Virginia's statewide rate was 3.9%.

But the D.C. metro area posted the largest year-over-year decline in nonfarm employment among all 387 U.S. metro areas at -2.4%, worse than any other region in the country.
