Reston Association shut down North Hills Pool on Sunday, Aug. 23, after vandals contaminated the water, according to a closure alert posted that afternoon. It is the first time this summer that vandalism forced one of the community's pools to close.

The association issued the alert at 12:45 p.m. and directed displaced swimmers to Lake Newport Pool, which remained open until 7 p.m. Residents can check the full pool schedule at reston.org/aquatics.

Reston Association did not describe what was introduced into the water or say whether a police report had been filed. The Fairfax County Police Department has not publicly commented on the incident. It is also unclear whether North Hills Pool will reopen Tuesday, Aug. 25, or remain closed longer.

The closure adds to a difficult summer for Reston's aquatics system. Dogwood Pool closed June 14 after a separate water contamination incident, and Glade Pool shut down Aug. 18 due to an electrical failure in its filter pump motor starter. In an alert posted that day, Reston Association said it would "not be opening any aspect of the pool facility until it is resolved."

Neither of those earlier closures involved vandalism.
