Nearly 6,000 people packed Lake Anne Plaza for Reston Pride's eighth annual festival on June 1, 2025. There won't be a ninth.

Reston Pride announced in late July that it will not hold its annual festival in 2026, citing what it called critical capacity challenges and an urgent need for leadership, operational support and financial sustainability. The free celebration of Reston's LGBTQ+ community, which started in 2018 as a gathering in a house of worship, has outgrown the volunteer infrastructure that built it.

The organization said on its website that rather than produce an unsustainable event, it is dedicating 2026 to rebuilding its foundation and preparing for a 10th-anniversary celebration in 2027. That milestone event is not guaranteed. Reston Pride said the comeback hinges on whether enough volunteers step forward to stabilize the organization.

What Reston Pride needs

The group is urgently recruiting board members with experience in nonprofit management, finance, fundraising, marketing, law and community organizing. It also needs committee leads and volunteers willing to take ownership of events, outreach, partnerships, fundraising and operations. Sponsorship inquiries for 2027 are already open.

The organization said its goal is to become a sustainable, year-round force for connection and advocacy, signaling a shift beyond the single-day festival model that carried it for eight years.

How the festival grew

Reston Pride launched in 2018 inside a house of worship, according to The Reston Letter. It moved to Lake Anne Plaza and grew each year, becoming one of the plaza's signature warm-weather draws. The 2024 edition ran noon to 6 p.m. at Lake Anne Plaza. By 2025, the crowd had swelled to nearly 6,000, the organization's largest turnout ever.

What's next

Reston Pride said it plans to host smaller events in 2026 and support other local Pride organizations while it rebuilds leadership and operational capacity. Residents interested in volunteering, donating or sponsoring can visit restonpride.org for details.
