Reston families in the South Lakes pyramid are part of a district-wide math surge. Fairfax County Public Schools posted an 80% pass rate on state math exams in 2026, up 19 percentage points since 2021.

The Virginia Department of Education released annual Standards of Learning (SOL) results on Tuesday, Aug. 25. FCPS pass rates hit 80% in reading, 80% in math and 76% in science.

Statewide, students passed at 74% in reading, 73% in math and 71% in science, according to the Virginia Department of Education. The state agency described Virginia's own gains as "modest increases in math and reading scores."

FCPS outperformed those averages by 6 points in reading, 7 in math and 5 in science.

The math trajectory tells the bigger story. FCPS's math pass rate was 61% in 2021, then rose each year: 74% in 2022, 75% in 2023, 76% in 2024, 78% in 2025 and 80% this year. In 2026, 76,082 of 95,554 tested students passed the math SOL.

The district noted that Virginia raised the rigor of its SOL standards in all three subjects since the pandemic, making the sustained climb more significant. FCPS year-over-year improvements between 2025 and 2026 exceeded statewide gains overall and for nearly every student group, according to the district.

Superintendent Michelle C. Reid tied the results to the district's Strategic Plan, launched in 2023. "We are now at the midpoint of this work and we continue to see that commitment come to life," Reid said Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Reid also highlighted an expansion of early algebra access. Sixth graders in FCPS elementary schools are now taking Algebra I, building on gains among students who accessed the course by eighth grade.

The results cover division-wide data. School-level pass rates for South Lakes High School, Langston Hughes Middle School and other Reston-area schools were not included in the district's release. Melanie Meren, the Hunter Mill District representative on the Fairfax County School Board, represents the South Lakes pyramid.

Those school-level figures are expected on the Virginia Department of Education's School Quality Profiles site in the coming weeks.
