More than half of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) now carry Virginia's highest performance rating, up from roughly a third a year ago.

FCPS announced Oct. 7 that all its schools are fully accredited for a second consecutive year. Under the state's School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF), 56% of FCPS schools earned a "Distinguished" designation in fall 2026, up from 38% in fall 2025.

For Reston families in the South Lakes pyramid, the district-wide gains follow strong Standards of Learning (SOL) results locally. As we reported Oct. 8, South Lakes High School outperformed both FCPS and state averages on those tests. Hunter Mill District School Board representative Melanie Meren's district includes South Lakes and Langston Hughes Middle School.

Overall, 75% of FCPS schools were rated "Distinguished" or "Meets Expectations." That tops the statewide figure of 70%. Across Virginia, 99% of schools are fully accredited, according to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

The SPSF, adopted by the Virginia Board of Education in September 2024, rates schools in four categories based on student achievement. Elementary and middle schools are measured on mastery, growth and readiness. High schools are measured on mastery, graduation and readiness.

Advanced math enrollment is surging across the district. For the 2026-27 school year, 85.7% of FCPS eighth graders are enrolled in Algebra I or higher. That marks a 19 percentage point gain since the 2024-25 school year.

Separately, FCPS's math SOL pass rate has climbed 19 percentage points since 2021, rising from 61% to 80%. Reading stands at 80% and science at 76%. All three exceed state averages.

"Every student deserves access to challenging coursework and the support to succeed," FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid said in the Oct. 7 announcement. "Our progress in Algebra I access reflects our commitment to excellence, equity and opportunity …"

Reid said Aug. 26, when SOL results were released, that the district is expanding Algebra I access to sixth graders in elementary schools.
