South Lakes lost its first game of the season Friday, Oct. 9, falling 42-38 to Oakton in the Concorde District opener for both teams.
The Seahawks led 38-21 in the second half but could not hold on. Oakton scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback at Oakton High School.
A referee error played a role in the collapse. Officials failed to flip the sideline down indicator during an Oakton drive, giving the Cougars an extra play that led to a touchdown, Reston Patch reported. South Lakes players and coaches protested the missed call on the sideline, but the officials did not correct it.
The Seahawks also lost three fumbles in the first half. Two led directly to Oakton scores. Coach Jason Hescock told Patch the turnovers represented a swing of 14 to 28 points.
James Smith scored twice on short runs for South Lakes. Quarterback Christian Wyatt completed 10 of 15 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown but threw one interception, according to MaxPreps. Joshua Dagbe caught a 61-yard touchdown pass. Kicker James Marburg added a 45-yard field goal.
The defense recorded three sacks. Sebastian Valencia and Michael Baxter accounted for all three, per MaxPreps.
Oakton quarterback Jack Martin threw for 277 yards and five touchdowns. The Cougars improved to 6-0.
The loss dropped South Lakes to 5-1. The Seahawks travel to Chantilly (3-3) on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., then close the regular season against Centreville, Madison and Westfield.
