Reston is losing its Mod Pizza but gaining a RAMMYs Award-winning replacement at Plaza America.
Andy's Pizza, the New York-style chain founded by cousins Emily and Andy Brown, has signed a lease for the 2,963-square-foot space at 11642 Plaza America Drive, according to FFXnow. The chain plans to open the location by the end of this year, though no specific date has been set.
Mod Pizza confirmed to FFXnow that its Reston location will permanently close on Sept. 30 after operating at the site since June 2016. The closure marks the end of Mod Pizza's presence in Fairfax County. The Seattle-based company has been pulling back from Northern Virginia over the past few years, shuttering locations in Vienna, Herndon, Fairfax City, Ashburn and near Chantilly.
A Mod Pizza spokesperson said the company "made the difficult decision to close its Reston location after nearly 10 years of operation."
What's coming
Andy's Pizza won Fast Casual Restaurant of the Year at the 44th annual RAMMYs on June 29 in Washington, D.C., according to FFXnow.
The chain launched in December 2018 at Tysons Galleria's Taste of Urbanspace food hall and now operates more than a dozen locations across the D.C. area. It has drawn coverage from The Washington Post and Washingtonian.
The Reston location will bring Andy's Pizza closer to 16 D.C.-area outposts. Existing spots include Fairfax City, Arlington and Gaithersburg. In Gaithersburg, Andy's also took over a former Mod Pizza space.
Inside the space
Building plans under review by Fairfax County staff show the Reston location will seat approximately 100 in its main dining room, with regular tables, high tables and booths. The county is reviewing the project under permit REC26-00000-015CL.
Andy's standard menu features pizza by the slice or whole, plus Old Bay-seasoned fries, chicken wings and fried brussels sprouts. Some locations, including Fairfax City, serve beer.
"I think it would be a great location. I had a lot of folks ask when we're coming to Reston," the manager of Andy's Tysons Galleria location told FFXnow.
