A free outdoor production of "Woody Guthrie's American Song" opens Friday, Sept. 4, at Reston Town Square Park, giving residents a no-cost option for the Labor Day weekend.

Washington, D.C.-based Theater Alliance performs the musical Friday through Friday, Sept. 4–6, at 7:30 p.m. each evening at 11900 Market St. The event is free.

The production is part of the Theatre in the Park series, presented by Reston Community Center and Reston Town Center Association, according to the event listing on FFXnow.

The musical weaves scenes from Guthrie's life with his folk songs, including "This Land is Your Land." Theater Alliance describes the show as a portrait of working people speaking up against economic collapse and political indifference.

The show has a long track record. It premiered in 1988 and has seen more than 100 productions nationwide at theaters including Ford's Theatre, Seattle Rep and Berkeley Rep, according to BroadwayWorld.

Peter Glazer conceived and adapted the piece. According to Theater Alliance, Tim Seib directs this production, which features a nine-member cast including Faith Wang, Marvin Wayne, Savina Barini and Jeremy Allen Crawford.

Reston Community Center co-presents the series. Executive director BeBe Nguyen said in an Aug. 27 Patch profile that RCC views collaboration as "just part of the Reston DNA."

The performances are outdoors. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Reston on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 3, the night before opening.
