Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Superintendent Michelle Reid will hold her first Community Conversation on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at McNair Elementary School in Herndon.
The 6:45 p.m. session is the first of six stops where parents and community members can ask Reid questions directly. The series is open to all FCPS families, including those in the Reston area. Depending on home address, some McNair students go on to South Lakes High School.
McNair is a two-campus school serving about 1,100 students on Thomas Jefferson Drive and Fox Mill Road. Students feed into Rachel Carson Middle School.
Five more sessions follow, all at 6:30 p.m. unless noted:
- Monday, Sept. 28, Riverside Elementary
- Monday, Oct. 19, Spring Hill Elementary
- Monday, Oct. 26, Beech Tree Elementary
- Thursday, Oct. 29, North Springfield Elementary
- Friday, Nov. 13, Powell Elementary
Each event runs one hour. Childcare and interpretation services will be provided, according to the district's weekly newsletter. Registration links had not been posted as of Sept. 2.
The tour comes as FCPS released 2026 Standards of Learning (SOL) results showing students outperforming Virginia averages in all three tested subjects. The Virginia Department of Education published the pass rates on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
FCPS students hit 80% in reading, six points above the state's 74%. In math, the district also reached 80%, seven points above Virginia's 73%. Science came in at 76%, topping the state's 71% by five points.
The math gains have been especially steep. The district's math pass rate has climbed 19 percentage points since 2021, when it stood at 61%.
"We have seen tremendous success in our students who are accessing Algebra I by eighth grade … Now, we are expanding access even earlier, with sixth graders taking Algebra 1 in our elementary schools," Reid said in the district's Aug. 26 announcement of the results.
FCPS year-over-year improvements between 2025 and 2026 exceeded statewide gains for nearly every student group in reading, math and science, according to the same announcement. No school-level SOL breakdowns for Reston-area schools have been released.
The first Community Conversation at McNair on Sept. 16 is open to all FCPS families. Registration links had not been posted as of the district's Sept. 2 newsletter.
