Capital Bikeshare riders in Fairfax County logged 6,560 trips in August, an all-time monthly high, then followed with 5,770 trips in September. The September figure was the highest ever for that month and the system's third-highest month overall, according to the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT).
Every month since June has set a new ridership record for its calendar month, the department said. Both June and August established all-time highs.
The surge follows a major expansion FCDOT completed over the summer. The county installed 27 new stations in Annandale, Bailey's Crossroads, Seven Corners, Belle Haven, Huntington and Mount Vernon. The project also added 45 electric bikes and 134 classic bikes to the fleet, as FFXnow reported.
Fairfax County now operates 126 Capital Bikeshare stations, including docks at all 13 Metrorail stations in the county. The system launched in Fairfax County in 2016 with 18 stations in Reston and Tysons, according to an FCDOT presentation to the county's Bicycle and Trails Committee. Annual trips grew from 851 that first year to 39,516 in 2025.
Reston stations remain among the busiest. Reston Town Center Metro North ranked second countywide with 1,536 trips, and the W&OD Trail station at Sunset Hills Road and Isaac Newton Square placed seventh with 707 trips, according to the FCDOT presentation.
One new station is already standing out. The dock at Route 7 and Jefferson Street in Bailey's Crossroads logged 857 trips between its May installation and the end of September, more than any other newly added station.
"Bikeshare helps fill in the gaps for those who choose to go car-free, eases the burden of walking to get to transit … and provides joy for those who know what freedom riding a bike can bring," FCDOT Active Transportation Program Manager Zachary DesJardins said.
DesJardins said riders are connecting to trails in Arlington, Alexandria and Falls Church, reaching as far as the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The county credited the National Park Service for cooperating on installations along the Mount Vernon Trail.
Electric bikes accounted for 49% of all trips in 2025 while making up 17% of the fleet, the FCDOT presentation showed. Average e-bike trips lasted 15 minutes, compared with 19 minutes for classic bikes.
Funding for the 27-station expansion came through congressionally directed spending from U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, FCDOT said. Lyft manages the Capital Bikeshare system across eight D.C.-area jurisdictions, including Fairfax County.
Riders can purchase single trips, day passes or annual memberships through the Capital Bikeshare app or station kiosks. A discounted Capital Bikeshare for All membership is available for eligible residents, offering unlimited 60-minute classic bike rides and a $40 monthly credit toward e-bike charges.
