South Lakes senior Aya Ryan won an individual VHSL Class 6 state championship in girls outdoor track and field this spring, capping a season in which the Seahawks produced multiple state-meet finalists and two school records under Coach Scott Raczko.
The girls team finished third at states with 45 points after sweeping Regionals for the fifth consecutive year. The boys placed fifth with 37 points, extending their own Regional title streak to two straight.
The senior class delivered across the board at the state meet. Caroline Elliott took second in the 1600m. The girls' 4x800m relay team of Quinn Jackson, Sarah Ghantiwala, Elliott and Ryan finished second in 8:56.03, a time ranked 11th in the nation. On the boys' side, Blake Jackson set a new South Lakes school record in the triple jump and placed second in the long jump. Alex Guthrie placed second in the 200m and third in the 100m. Milo Wilkins broke the school's shot put record, finishing sixth.
Several of those seniors walked at graduation on a Friday morning, then boarded buses to compete at the state meet the same day.
The Seahawks boys soccer team also won the Concorde District title this spring.
Raczko's track squad earned Team of the Year at the Lakes Show Awards Ceremony. Elliott won Female Athlete of the Year, and Guthrie took Male Athlete of the Year. Ryan and Wilkins received Tri-Sport Athlete awards, and Quinn Jackson won Top Rookie.
Ryan was one of 15 individual FCPS state champions this spring, according to Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid's June 21 weekly update, which also counted five team titles across the county.
Elliott heads to the University of Virginia and Ryan to the University of Richmond, where both will compete in Division I track and field.
