The Fairfax County School Board will vote July 16 on a permanent boundary for Skyview High School in Herndon.
If approved, some South Lakes High School students would be reassigned to the new campus starting in the 2027-28 school year, splitting Reston families across two high school pyramids for the first time in a generation.
A public hearing is scheduled for Monday.
What hasn't been released
FCPS has not publicly detailed which South Lakes neighborhoods fall within the proposed Skyview boundary or how many students would move. Residents seeking specifics can contact the FCPS Office of Facilities Planning Services at 571-423-2320.
The school
Skyview High School sits on 30 acres at 2949 Education Drive in Herndon. FCPS finalized the $150 million purchase of the former King Abdullah Academy in August. The School Board unanimously approved the name "Skyview" at a meeting in February. According to FCPS, it is the district's first new high school since Westfield High School in Chantilly opened in September 2000.
Principal Dave Jagels is leading the school. Jagels previously oversaw the opening of Westfield more than 25 years ago.
"We have a beautiful building, opportunities to create a learning community together, a chance to build culture, climate in sports, athletics, band, performing arts and all of that together in a way that's never been done before," Jagels told the Reston Connection. "This is probably the pinnacle opportunity of my career."
How enrollment works
The permanent boundary the board votes on July 16 would take effect for the 2027-28 school year. In the meantime, Skyview opened for the 2026-27 school year under an opt-in model, meaning families can choose to send students there before the boundary is finalized.
