Showcasing a stunning color palette and craftsmanship developed through 30 years of practice, artist Cindy Griselda has unveiled her newest solo show.
"Shape Shifting," Grisdela's solo exhibit, opened Saturday at the Lake Anne Plaza gallery and runs through Sunday, July 26. Residents can meet the artist at a free public reception on Sunday, July 12, from 2 to 4 p.m., with light refreshments.
The show features contemporary wall quilts that abstract curved and angular shapes into arrangements of color, line and space. Grisdela, a Reston resident, describes each decision about color and shape as influencing the next, much like jazz improvisation.
"I'm intrigued by color, line, and shape, just like any other artist," Grisdela said on her studio website. "Working with fabric like a painter works with paint, I create dynamic contemporary compositions, cutting the shapes out freehand without a pattern or template and sewing them together with my sewing machine."
Grisdela holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the College of William and Mary and is the author of three books on improvisational quilting. Her style draws inspiration from painters Henri Matisse, Paul Klee and Helen Frankenthaler, and her work hangs in private collections across the country.
RAGS, founded and operated by Pat Macintyre since December 1986, is a privately owned cooperative gallery at 11400 Washington Plaza West. The gallery is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m., or by appointment. Free "Crafts for Kids" sessions run every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon through November.
