Reston families can provide feedback on their middle school and high school children's math textbooks before the beginning of the next academic year.
Parents and family members of students at Langston Hughes Middle School or South Lakes High School have until July 12 to tell Fairfax County Public Schools what they think of the new math textbooks headed for classrooms in August.
FCPS is adopting new mathematics instructional materials covering Math 6 at the middle school level through Algebra 2 for the 2026-27 school year, according to the district's June 17 newsletter. A review committee of community members, administrators and teachers evaluated materials submitted by vendors. The district has not publicly named the specific textbook or vendor under consideration.
"All community feedback will be shared with the review committee and the Fairfax County School Board before a board vote in July," says the FCPS website.
How to review and comment
Families can access the proposed materials and submit feedback through a digital form online using the FCPS Mathematics Basal Resource webpage or in person using hard copies available at the Willow Oaks Welcome Center. Families with further queries can email [email protected].
Who's affected in Reston
The adoption covers every secondary math course from sixth grade through Algebra 2. That means incoming Math 6 students at Langston Hughes and students taking Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 at South Lakes will use the new materials when school starts Monday, Aug. 24.
What happens next
The School Board has regular business meetings scheduled for Thursday, July 9, and Thursday, July 16. FCPS communications describe the vote as happening "sometime in July" but do not specify which meeting will include the math materials adoption. Agendas will be posted to BoardDocs closer to each date.
