The Reston Association was forced to shut down an Uplands pool on Friday after detecting water contamination.

The shutdown forced swimmers to find alternatives on a day when temperatures in the D.C. metro area were forecast above 100°F.

The association posted an alert at 3:30 p.m. stating the lower pool would remain closed for the rest of the day. The upper/lap pool, splash pad and all pool deck space stayed open until 7 p.m.

"Nearby pools to enjoy include North Shore Pool and Golf Course Island Pool (both open until 7pm). Tall Oaks Pool is open until 8:00pm," the association wrote to social media.

The closure landed the day before the July 4 holiday weekend, when pool demand peaks across Reston's community. The association had issued a separate heat advisory for the area, expected to last through the weekend, and urged members to take precautions to stay cool. Washington, D.C., was forecast to reach 103°F on Friday, with heat index values across the region climbing as high as 110°F, according to the New York Times.

The association did not specify the type of contamination in its alert. No follow-up notice confirming when the lower pool reopened has been posted.

In past contamination events at other RA pools, the association has said filtration takes at least eight hours before a pool can reopen. Mike McNamara, RA's director of maintenance and natural resources, described that timeline after a prior incident at Autumnwood Pool.

Where to swim instead

The association directed displaced swimmers to three nearby pools:

  • North Shore Pool — open until 7 p.m.
  • Golf Course Island Pool — open until 7 p.m.
  • Tall Oaks Pool — open until 8 p.m.
