Robyn Lady will preside over her first major decision as Fairfax County School Board chair next week: a vote on boundary lines for Skyview High School that would reassign 384 South Lakes students to the new Herndon campus.
The board elected Lady, who represents the Dranesville District, as chair at its Thursday regular meeting. Kyle McDaniel, an at-large member, was elected vice chair. Both will serve for the 2026-27 school year.
For Reston families in the South Lakes pyramid, the timing matters. Superintendent Michelle Reid's preliminary boundary recommendation, released July 2, would move those 384 students to Skyview starting with the 2027-28 school year. The boundaries would take full effect in 2028-29. A public hearing on the plan is set for Sunday, with the board vote following three days later.
No changes are proposed to Langston Hughes Middle School or Oakton High School boundaries under Reid's plan.
Who is Robyn Lady?
Lady served as vice chair during the 2025-26 school year and previously chaired the Governance Committee, where she oversaw revisions to the division's grading policy. She spent more than 30 years in public education and retired from FCPS after 15 years as director of Student Services at Chantilly High School. She holds degrees from the College of William and Mary, the University of Virginia and George Mason University.
Lady said she looks forward to collaboration with the board, Superintendent Reid, and the community to ensure every student can thrive.
She lives in Herndon with her wife Stephanie and their children.
McDaniel brings planning experience
McDaniel, a Fairfax County resident for more than two decades, chaired the Comprehensive Planning and Development Committee during the 2025-26 school year. He also served as vice chair of the Budget Committee. A George Mason University and American University graduate, McDaniel has two daughters in FCPS schools.
He said he is focused on listening to the community and supporting Lady's leadership on behalf of students and families.
What's ahead for Reston families
Beyond the Skyview vote, the board faces a decision on new math instructional materials for courses from Math 6 through Algebra 2. Community feedback on the proposed resources closes Saturday. Classes begin August 24.
