A Fairfax County elementary school principal is one of 29 school leaders statewide to earn a spot in Virginia's inaugural class of Principals of Distinction.

Shane Wolfe, the principal who has led Aldrin Elementary School since 2012, secured the honor and is one of only three recipients from Fairfax County Public Schools.

The Virginia Department of Education recognized the first-year class at its June board meeting, honoring principals who demonstrated strong records of improving student achievement, providing instructional leadership and reducing non-academic barriers for students. VDOE, the Virginia Board of Education, the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals and the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals all partnered up to create the program.

For Aldrin's roughly 450 students in preschool through sixth grade, the recognition reflects a school culture producing measurable results. On 2024-25 Virginia Standards of Learning assessments, 85% of Aldrin students scored proficient in reading and 84% in math, according to FCPS school profile data. The school's 92% regular attendance rate tops both the district average of 88% and the state average of 85%.

"This year's Principals of Distinction are delivering on what high expectations and excellence look like for every student," Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Jenna Conway said.

FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid celebrated the honor in her weekly reflections in June, calling it a reflection of the principals' commitment to high expectations and their work building strong school cultures. The two other FCPS honorees are Shawn DeRose of Annandale High School and Kambar Khoshaba of South County High School.

To qualify, principals need at least five years of experience in a Virginia public or accredited nonpublic school and completion of a formal induction program. Wolfe participated in a professional development symposium in Richmond and completed a six-month capstone project demonstrating school-level impact. The program also carries a credentialing benefit: a Level II endorsement in administration and supervision for pre-K through grade 12.

Wolfe's track record at Aldrin extends well beyond this latest honor. He won the Virginia PTA Principal Partner of the Year award in May of 2024. He was recognized for initiatives like Aldrin Reads, which sends staff into the community twice a year with books, snacks and activities to build home libraries. He previously served as president of the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals during the 2014-15 term.

Wolfe spent nearly his entire administrative career in the Herndon-Reston area, starting as assistant principal at Terraset Elementary before leading Armstrong Elementary and later Bailey's Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences in Falls Church.

Aldrin's 2026-27 school year begins Monday, August 24. Incoming kindergarten families can attend playdates on Tuesday, July 28, at 6:30 p.m. or Thursday, August 6, at 3 p.m. Back to School Night is Wednesday, September 16.
