Nearly 400 South Lakes High School students would move to the new Skyview High School in Herndon under a boundary proposal headed for a School Board vote Thursday.

Superintendent Michelle Reid's preliminary recommendation, released July 2, would reassign 384 South Lakes students to Skyview starting in the 2027-28 school year. The plan also draws 333 students from Chantilly High School and 1,062 from Westfield High School, bringing the new campus to 89% capacity.

The School Board will hold a public hearing on the proposal at 6 p.m. on July 13 at Jackson Middle School. Speaker sign-ups closed July 9, but families can still attend. Questions can be directed to [email protected] or (571) 423-1075.

What the phasing plan means

Rising ninth graders in 2027-28 would have the option to remain at South Lakes based on their "educational needs," according to the FCPS boundary study materials. That one-year flexibility window closes after 2027-28. Skyview's boundaries take full effect for all grade levels in the 2028-29 school year.

How to check your address

FCPS built an online boundary explorer tool at fcpswesternboundary.org where families can search their address to see whether the recommendation affects their school assignment.

The $150 million campus

Skyview sits on 30 acres at 2949 Education Drive in Herndon, the former site of the private King Abdullah Academy, which closed at the end of the 2024-25 school year. FCPS acquired the property for $150 million in summer 2025.

The school opens in fall 2026 with more than 700 ninth and 10th graders who opted in from the Centreville, Chantilly, Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield pyramids.

Overall, the boundary adjustments would affect approximately 2,544 students across western Fairfax County, with 2,124 at the high school level and 420 middle schoolers. Reid's proposal followed four months of community meetings that began March 25 at Westfield High School.

The School Board is scheduled to vote on the boundary changes and the phasing and transportation plan on Thursday, July 16.
