A woman was found fatally stabbed Monday, Aug. 17, at a gravel parking area off Georgetown Pike that serves as an access point to the Difficult Run Stream Valley Trail, a corridor used by Reston residents.

Fairfax County police responded around 7 a.m. Monday to the 8800 block of Georgetown Pike in Great Falls after a jogger arriving for a morning run spotted the woman lying unconscious outside her vehicle, according to FFXnow. Officers found trauma to her upper body and pronounced her dead at the scene.

By 10:30 a.m., detectives had classified the death as a homicide. No suspect has been named and no arrest has been made.

FCPD Capt. Jason Chandler, commander of the department's public affairs bureau, described the location as "a parking area leading to several trails" used by community members for walking and hiking. The Difficult Run Stream Valley Trail, which connects to Great Falls Park, begins nearby.

"There's no immediate indication that this was a random act," Chandler said. "We're just asking the community, if they saw anything around 7 o'clock, to please reach out to us."

The victim has been identified only as an adult woman who lived in Fairfax County. Police said they do not believe she lived in the immediate area where she was found, NBC Washington reported. A vehicle registered to her was parked nearby.

Investigators had not determined why the woman was at the trailhead, whether she arrived alone or how long she had been there as of Monday's media briefing.

Georgetown Pike was closed in both directions at Old Dominion Drive during the investigation.

Detectives are canvassing the area for surveillance footage, including cameras from residents who do not participate in the department's Connect Fairfax camera program, according to Patch. The FCPD's Major Crimes Bureau is handling the case.
