Reston Association members who don't live on the water now have a place to stash their kayaks at the lake's edge.

RA's new lakefront boat storage pilot at Lake Audubon gives 16 members a seasonal rack slot at the boat ramp on Twin Branches Road, allocated each spring through a lottery. The cost: $135 for the March-through-November season.

The program targets the majority of RA's more than 22,000 homes that sit away from the community's four man-made lakes. Until now, members without lakefront access had to haul their kayaks or canoes to the water each trip or pay for off-site storage at RA's Central Services Facility on Sunset Hills Road.

RA said the pilot grew out of member feedback and its broader push to expand lake access. The association's board voted unanimously on Jan. 22 to approve a Lake Equity Working Group staff roadmap, directing quarterly progress reports on lake access initiatives including the storage program.

That working group also recommended the "Lovin' the Lakes" open house held May 16 at the same Lake Audubon boat ramp, which offered free kayak and paddleboard demos, water safety orientations and information on boat permits.

RA plans to add lakefront storage racks at Lakes Anne and Newport by the end of 2026, though no specific installation dates or budget figures have been published.

The annual lottery is held each spring, and the current 2026 season's 16 slots may already be filled. Members can find the Boat Rack Rental Application on RA's boating page for the next cycle. A free General Lake Access Permit, required for any hand-carried boat on RA lakes, is available to members only.

Those who need year-round storage are directed to RA's Recreational Vehicle Community Parking Program, which operates separately from the lakefront pilot.
