Andrew Skaggs will trace the trombone's journey from church choirs to Latin dance halls in a free outdoor concert at Reston Town Square Park on Sunday, July 19, from 7 to 8 p.m.
Skaggs, an adjunct assistant professor of trombone at Shenandoah Conservatory, leads the program titled "Bone Voyage! The Trombone: From Early Days to Big Band, Latin & Pop." The hour-long performance surveys how the instrument evolved through early sacred music, big band jazz, Latin rhythms and modern pop.
No tickets or registration required.
The concert is part of the Sunday Art in the Park series, a free all-ages lineup presented by Reston Community Center and Reston Town Center Association in partnership with Shenandoah Conservatory. The series runs every Sunday evening through August 30 at the park, located at the corner of Market Street and Explorer Street in Reston Town Center. Free garage parking is available at Reston Town Center on weekends.
Next week's installment, on Sunday, July 26, features Shenandoah Conservatory's class of 2027 musical theatre students performing "The Disney Classics," also from 7 to 8 p.m.
If rain threatens, check the Reston Community Center website or call 703-476-4500 for day-of updates.
