A two-alarm fire destroyed an abandoned building at 1624 Hunter Mill Road in Reston on Sunday night, Oct. 18.

The vacant two-story structure had sat empty for nearly a decade on a property that has drawn redevelopment interest. No injuries were reported.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units were dispatched at 10:25 p.m. to an address on Crowell Road before spotting smoke closer to the Dulles Toll Road and determining the fire was at the Hunter Mill Road site, FFXnow first reported, citing scanner traffic.

The department said in a Facebook post that units "arrived to find an abandoned, two-story building with fire showing throughout." Crews searched the building while stretching multiple hose lines to fight the blaze.

A second alarm brought additional units to the scene. Police were called in to manage traffic backing up on Hunter Mill Road, according to scanner traffic reported by FFXnow.

Firefighters brought the fire under control by 11:30 p.m.

"Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire," the department said.

The building appears to have been part of the former Fairfax Christian School campus. The private school vacated the site in 2018 when it relocated to a larger campus in Dulles, according to FFXnow.

The nearly 30-acre property has been a focus of development proposals. G&G LLC proposed in 2025 transforming approximately 67 acres along Hunter Mill Road near the Sunset Hills Road and Crowell Road intersections into a neighborhood with up to 100 homes, according to FFXnow. The proposal required a Site-Specific Plan Amendment.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission recommended against advancing the plan. Commissioner Carter said the proposal fell short of screening criteria, citing the lack of transit access, no affordable housing, an unresolved road realignment and compatibility issues with the adjacent community, as FFXnow reported in May 2025. The nomination was withdrawn.

The property changed hands anyway. Fairfax County property records show the former campus sold for $4 million on April 24, 2026, to Sunset Hills Dreams LLC. The company is an apparent affiliate of G&G LLC that shares its Alexandria address, according to FFXnow.

Fire investigators have not announced a cause or indicated whether the fire is considered suspicious.
