Reston residents can drop off unused or expired medications for free at Reston Hospital Center on Saturday, Oct. 24, as part of National Drug Take Back Day.

The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are hosting the collection from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at nine sites across the county, according to the FCPD.

The Reston drop-off is at 1850 Town Center Pkwy, outside Pavilion 1, across from Parking Garage B. No appointment is needed.

The event accepts prescription and non-prescription pills, prescription ointments, pet medications, and e-cigarettes or vaping devices with batteries removed. Needles, pressurized canisters such as inhalers, large quantities of liquids, illegal drugs and non-prescription ointments or lotions will not be accepted, the FCPD said.

The FCPD said unused medications at home can lead to accidental poisoning, misuse and addiction. Improperly discarded medications can also end up in the environment and eventually in drinking water, according to Fairfax County's health department.

Residents should remove personal information from prescription labels before bringing medications to the drop-off.

Eight other county sites will also accept medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including the Fair Oaks, Franconia, Mount Vernon, Sully and West Springfield district police stations, the Town of Vienna Police Department, Goodwin House in Bailey's Crossroads and Tysons Emergency.
