Reston's Glade Drive and Bowman Towne Drive could get new bike lanes in 2027 under a proposal from the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT).

The county is seeking public input on the plan before sending a final list to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for its 2027 repaving season, as FFXnow first reported Oct. 22.

FCDOT will hold a virtual public meeting for the Hunter Mill District on Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. An online comment survey will open after the meeting and close Nov. 18. Comments can also be submitted by phone or U.S. mail, according to the county's roadway restriping program page.

Where the lanes would go

The proposed bike lanes cover four segments, all in Reston:

  • Glade Drive between Reston Parkway and Shire Court
  • Glade Drive between Shire Court and Charterhouse Circle
  • Glade Drive between Glade Bank Way and Soapstone Drive
  • Bowman Towne Drive between Town Center Parkway and Reston Parkway

FCDOT said in a press release that presenting proposals ahead of the 2027 paving season gives the department time to gather feedback and finalize striping plans for VDOT approval.

The improvements would be installed when VDOT repaves those roads. Exact work dates are set about 10 days before crews arrive, according to the county.

Part of a countywide effort

The Hunter Mill meeting is one of three FCDOT is hosting in early November. Meetings for the Braddock/Mason districts and the Springfield/Mount Vernon districts are scheduled for Nov. 5 and Nov. 9. Each focuses on proposed bike lanes and crosswalk improvements in those areas.

The restriping program pairs new bike lanes and crosswalks with roads already scheduled for repaving, keeping costs lower than standalone projects. FCDOT reviews VDOT's draft paving list each year and looks for places to add bike lanes, crosswalks and other safety markings, the program page states.

Bike lanes have drawn mixed reactions in Reston

The proposal comes as some Reston residents are still sorting out the effects of earlier bike-lane projects. In September 2025, The Reston Letter reported that Halstead Glen townhome residents on Reston's north side were asking officials to reconsider bike lanes and no-parking zones installed in 2024 on Center Harbor Road near Aldrin Elementary School. Those lanes replaced curbside parking spaces, and residents said parking demand spikes during school events and evenings.

That matters here.

Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn told The Reston Letter in an August 2025 email that he had asked transportation engineers "to look into whether more on-street parking could be added in that immediate area and still maintain a safe bicycle travel lane."

How to weigh in

Residents who want to participate in the Nov. 4 meeting can join online or by phone. Meeting recordings and presentation slides will be posted to the county's restriping program page after the session. The comment period closes Nov. 18.
