Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has ended its contract with Hazel Health, cutting off the virtual mental health services the vendor provided to middle and high school students across the district.
The change affects Reston families with students at every FCPS middle and high school, including those in the South Lakes pyramid.
No replacement has been announced.
The district disclosed the termination in its Nov. 4 newsletter but offered no explanation for why the contract ended. FCPS did not say how many students had been using the service or whether it plans to find a new teletherapy provider.
FCPS said it has resources available to support student mental health and encouraged families to contact their child's school for help finding alternatives. The district also suggested families talk to their child's pediatrician or another trusted care professional.
FCPS schools have on-site mental health staff, according to the district's resources page. That team includes school counselors, psychologists, social workers and substance abuse prevention specialists.
Families in crisis can call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which offers free, 24/7 support. The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board emergency line is 703-573-5679.
FCPS has not announced a timeline for any next steps on virtual mental health services for students.
